A few weeks ago, Daniela called me in tears of frustration. She was feeling stuck, watching herself repeat behaviors that were getting in the way of her professional advancement, but seemingly unable to change them. A Senior Director at a major telecomm company, we had met when I spoke at a women in technology conference a few months prior.
She described being unable to speak up in meetings, feeling unqualified to be in the room, and not expert enough in anything to have a voice. She felt inferior to, less than, her male colleagues. And she’d been avoiding applying for the VP position that would give her the income, responsibility and location opportunities she needed to best support her family. All this, despite her Mechanical Engineering degree, an MBA and rave reviews from her staff and boss!
The world is in a major transition and these uncertain times can leave us feeling isolated and powerless. But this transition is also calling us to step up, to be our best selves, to be fully authentic in our personal and professional lives. And that calling is frequently taking the form of “pivot points,” those moments when the doors of perception are blown open and we’re shown a new possibility to step into.
For Daniela, that took the form of unearthing subconscious beliefs formed in her traditional Latin American immigrant childhood that included never “showing up” the men in her family, and the most she could expect, as she put it, was to be “a housewife with a bunch of kids."
Once these “inner glass ceilings” were shattered and cleared, she was free to own her own capabilities, her authentic power. She was no longer driving with the brakes on! Not only did she start speaking up in meetings and getting positive attention from senior management, but she interviewed for that VP position, and got it!
Sometimes, those pivot points are voluntary, like Daniela’s call for help. Sometimes they’re involuntary, what I like to call “the 2x4 school of personal development,” when we’re hit in the head by an event that rocks our world.
